Authorities believe the body found in a chest freezer in Schuth's basement is that of his elderly mother, but the body has not yet been identified. Schuth told investigators that he placed his mother's body in the freezer after she died of natural causes Aug. 15, 2000, according to police reports. Schuth said he did not report his mother's death because "he would be charged with homicide in connection with her death," because investigators would likely find a large amount of his mother's blood on the walls of an upstairs hallway. He admitted the blood was his mother's when she was attacked by a cat several years earlier.
