The Atlantic Online | June 2009 | What Makes Us Happy? | Joshua Wolf Shenk.
His central question is not how much or how little trouble these men met, but rather precisely how—and to what effect—they responded to that trouble.

Just how poorly are things going for Mr. Brown? His popularity has fallen further and faster than any prime minister since reliable polling became available nearly 80 years ago. Just six weeks ago, the G-20 summit in London provided him the opportunity to play the role of effective economic crisis manager. But since the event, he's had to fire a close adviser, Damian McBride, when the press discovered that Mr. McBride had attempted to smear various members of the opposition with salacious falsehoods. Mr. Brown's annual budget drew an avalanche of criticism because it raises the income tax rate for top earners to 50%. He thus broke the Labour Party's pledge not to raise income taxes. He's also losing control of his parliamentary majority. On the foreign-policy side, Mr. Brown drew surprisingly little attention at home for his visit last week to Afghanistan and Pakistan. He won faint domestic praise for the final British pull-out from Basra in southern Iraq. In fact, pressure is now growing in London for a 9/11-style commission to study how and why British troops were sent to Iraq in the first place. Cameras and microphones now trail Labour Party heavyweights in hopes of capturing a major public blow against what's left of Mr. Brown's authority. And polls show that Labour now trails the Conservative Party by 15 to 20 percentage points.

Aide Quits Over New York Flyover - WSJ.com.
In a resignation letter submitted to President Barack Obama on Friday, White House Military Office Director Louis Caldera said the controversy over the April 27 photo-op has made it impossible for him to lead effectively and "has become a distraction to the important work you are doing as president."
Does anybody else think this is a pretty sucky photo, for a photo op that cost over $300,000 and the job of a White House Aide? The color is terrible, and as has been pointed out dozens of times, Photoshop could have made a better-looking pic. In fact, with some good Hollywood special effects video editing, we could have had a movie of Air Force One doing LOOPS over Lady Liberty!! This one is my favorite, though.

Latest buzz is that new free-agent QB Brett Favre, 39, who could end up with the Vikings, has hired a personal trainer at home in Mississippi. Favre's sudden arrival on the market makes you wonder if that's the reason the Vikings haven't spent much on free agency this year. Maybe they knew something.

Significantly, Barack Obama is a lot tougher on his domestic American opponents than on tyrants who threaten our values and America itself. He tells the Republicans that they’d better stop listening to Rush Limbaugh, but he doesn’t criticize Palestinians who raise their children to hate the Jews. He bows to the Saudi monarch, but humiliates the prime minister of Great Britain. He expresses astonishment that anyone can worry about a national security threat from Hugo Chavez’ Venezuela, even as Chavez solidifies an alliance with Iran that brings plane loads of terror masters, weapons and explosives into our hemisphere from Tehran via Damascus, fuels terrorists and narcotics traffic, and offers military facilities to Russian warships and aircraft. He is seemingly unconcerned by radical Islam and a resurgent Communism in Latin America, even as his Department of Homeland Security fires a warning shot at veterans–the best of America–returning from the Middle East. He seeks warm relations with Iran and Syria–who are up to their necks in American blood–while warning Israel of dire consequences if she should attempt to preempt a threatened Iranian nuclear attack.

I could not believe the news reports this evening-- that the White House was apologizing for scaring the living daylights out of half of New York over what must be the STUPIDEST reason-- a photo opportunity for Air Force One... I cannot even begin to imagine the stupidity, the absolute imbecility, it would take to come up with the idea of FLYING A 747 AT LOW ALTITUDE OVER NEW YORK WITHOUT TELLING ANYBODY. I guess it only goes to show that the man on the street has a longer memory than our esteemed President, who admitted to signing off on this asinine stunt. This is one of the biggest cluster***** I've ever heard of-- and we're only 100 days into this term.

"To the extent that terrorists have come into our country, or suspected or known terrorists have entered our country across a border, it's been across the Canadian border," Ms. Napolitano told the CBC. Asked if she was referring to the 9/11 attackers, Ms. Napolitano replied: "Not just those, but others as well."
via Canada seeks dialogue on border. And this is our Chief of Homeland Security?? The "9/11 terrorists came from Canada" report was debunked years ago! Last week, anybody who wasn't enthralled with "the One" --especially those veteran types-- was labeled a potential terrorist. First, the Rightwing nutjobs, and now the poor Canadians. I feel much safer now.

It's time for the Daily Laugh. Well, either that or cry, when you read the following piece.
April 15th. Write that date down; people- it could very well mark the beginning of the end. With the notoriously conservative Tea Party movement gaining steam, is it time to take the ‘United’ out of ‘United States’? An off-the-cuff and seemingly harmless comment from CNBC drone Rick Santelli- who called for a Chicago ‘Tea Party’ in response to Obama’s handling of the worsening economic situation- has now developed into a full-blown national movement. On April 15th, hundreds of thousands of PO’d red meat eatin’ Americans will converge on the streets to protest the Obama administration’s policies and platforms. Over 360 cities nationwide have been confirmed as protest staging points, and conservative luminaries like Newt Gingrich and Sean ‘Rough Rider’ Hannity will lend their considerable girth and celebrity to ensure a sense of bloated spectacle. The Tea (Taxed Enough Already) Party-people consider themselves a coherent and diverse network of Americans from every conceivable walk of life. They are cultural warriors fighting against the tax-happy, spend-happy ways of the evil Obama cabal, real American patriots, and staunch defenders against the creeping evils of Socialism. In reality, their ‘movement’ is incredibly divisive, a mindset that stands in sharp contrast to Obama’s calls for bipartisanship in this time of great national need. Their arguments have the potential to divide the country along titanic lines not seen since the bloody days of the Civil War. Think I’m exaggerating here? The Tea Party movement is an incredibly dangerous concept, fuelled by the usual gushes of sycophantic support from the conservative news media (here’s looking at you, Fox). Consider a recent poll posted on Sean Hannity’s website, asking his loyal followers if they thought America was ripe for ‘revolution’. Or perhaps you’ve heard some of the vitriolic treasonous crap spewing forth from the mouth of Fox’s resident white-haired lunatic, He Who Shall Go Unnamed. You can tune in to his show practically any day of the week for an (increasingly) thinly veiled call to arms against the President and his evil liberal cronies. The Tea Party Movement is basically a flag for Republicans disenfranchised by last year’s election results to rally behind. Give it up, guys. You lost fair and square. Obama and his policies have the mandate of the people- unlike a certain Bush I could mention. If the country continues down this dark path, a second Civil War might not just be a cool idea for a sci-fi novel anymore. Can you imagine the potential for chaos if some of these ‘protesters’ decide to exercise the Second Amendment and bring their weapons to these rallies? There’s a thin line between peaceful protest and bloodthirsty patriotic fervor, especially if those protesting are used to being on the side of the mighty status quo. I hope April 15th comes and goes without major incident. And I hope the protesters fail in their mission to bring their message to a national audience. It’s a message of fear, prejudice and, quite frankly, hate. President Obama was elected democratically, according to the doctrines set forth by the Founding Fathers. The Tea Party movement represents a real danger to the tenets of democracy Americans have embraced for centuries.
