Works and Days: Everybody But You
I don’t know how many forgotten Americans there are out, but I have a feeling the answer may well determine the next election.
Read the whole thing. I hope our candidates do.

In honor of what's falling.....again... outside my window. I have no clue where I'm going to put this latest dose--I think I need a bigger yard. Man, am I glad February is over, even if it DID have an extra day this year. Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age
Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966. The U.S. National Climatic Data Center NCDC reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January "was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 20th century average."
Real Debate Wisconsin says it best -- I loved this cartoon!

It occurs to me that, best intentions or no, I always seem to wind up caught with my figurative pants down when the end of each class looms. Not only do I have a final exam to write by Saturday night, I am also frantically putting the finishing touches on the term paper on Cold War Society. "Frantically", in that I dislike hate am so excited over how it's shaping up. This disorganization is ridiculous. I hereby declare a complete moratorium on the world until I complete. my. homework. Except to note this. Love him or hate him-- and there wasn't much in between-- ya gotta appreciate someone who did this:
A precocious controversialist, William was but 8 when he wrote to the king of England, demanding payment of the British war debt.
or this:
Buckley so loved a good argument — especially when he won — that he compiled a book of bickering in "Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription," published in 2007 and featuring correspondence with the famous (Nixon, Reagan) and the merely annoyed.
See ya Saturday. I hope. In the meantime, Rudy is helping me by keeping my citations and other assorted papers from escaping.....

Okay, so my first try at the requested cherry turnovers ("we don't need no steenkin' recipes!") didn't turn out too hot. In fact, there was a somewhat.... explosive.... aspect to them and we were forced to eat them with a spoon. With ice cream. "Cherry Scramble" is delicious. We adjust.

Fidel Castro resigns as Cubas president - Yahoo News
HAVANA - An ailing, 81-year-old Fidel Castro resigned as Cuba's president Tuesday after nearly a half-century in power, saying he will not accept a new term when parliament meets Sunday.
And here I was, all excited because a topic/question/thesis for the next paper came to me as I scrubbed in the shower this morning!! Jumped on the 'puter to get it written down before my foggy brain lost it, and here is the morning's best news. And if you're reading this from 'sconsin-- get yer tail to the polls today. Voting is your right, your priveledge, your responsibility. There is no excuse to not do your part.

A visit from Mike Huckabee Thursday, Barack Obama yesterday in a closed visit that has raised some hackles, and a visit from Hilary Clinton today... now if the national media could only quit pronouncing it "Warsaw, Westconsin" we'd be all set. We already know our popularity will fade quickly.

Kosovo declares independence
PRISTINA, Kosovo - Kosovo declared itself a nation on Sunday, mounting a historic bid to become an "independent and democratic state" backed by the U.S. and key European allies but bitterly contested by Serbia and Russia. "Kosovo is a republic — an independent, democratic and sovereign state," parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi said as the chamber burst into applause. Krasniqi, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and President Fatmir Sejdiu signed the declaration, which was scripted on parchment. Serbian President Boris Tadic immediately rejected the independence bid, saying his country will never accept Kosovo's "unilateral and illegal" declaration. Russia denounced Kosovo's independence declaration and called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council, underlining its opposition to the Serbian province's Western-backed bid for statehood. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said Russia supports Serbia's "just demands to restore the country's territorial integrity" and wants the Security Council to renew efforts to reach a settlement on the issue of Kosovo's status. Sunday's declaration was carefully orchestrated with the U.S. and key European powers, and Kosovo was counting on swift international recognition that could come as early as Monday, when EU foreign ministers meet in Brussels, Belgium.
Next up.... Chechnya, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Scotland.... and da UP (aka the State of Superior).
